Peter Ball, who has died aged 87, was the first Anglican bishop to be sent to prison since 1688, when King James II committed seven bishops to the Tower for their opposition to his Declaration of Indulgence.
Ball’s offence was very different inasmuch as it involved the sexual assault of teenage boys, which first came to light in 1993 when he admitted an offence against a young aspirant monk. For this he accepted a police caution, which amounted to an admission of guilt.
Immediate resignation from the Bishopric of Gloucester, to which he had been appointed only a few months earlier, followed and he retired to Cornwall where his twin brother, Michael, was Bishop of Truro. He gave him permission...
